It was the second week of our dog Cruze's trip to the Outer Banks. The first week had been spent in Kill Devil Hills.
We were now in Hatteras, North Carolina, or as I like to call it, "the end of the world." We used VBRO, which stands for Vacation Rentals by Owner. You can find many accommodations that are dog friendly on the site. Dog-friendly means these places are so minimal the owners are not worried about you damaging anything.
The name of our beach townhouse was Yellowfin. There were 20 or so townhouses in the complex, all named after types of fish. They were two bedrooms and two baths with living rooms and were located about a block from the beach and the Hatteras lighthouse. Every day we would start our day or end it with a beach walk with Cruze.
I was surprised to see homes literally falling into the ocean in Hatteras. How that happened, I'm not sure, but that must be heartbreaking to see your beach home get swallowed by the sea. We spoke to several of the locals, and it has been a problem all over this part of the island.

Things To Do:
WW2 British Sailor Cemetery Not where you would expect to see a couple of British sailors buried, but we appreciate their service to protect our country.
The benefit of a trip to a remote location makes it a bit tough to find military lodging nearby. The closest accommodation is about 2 hours north: Elisabeth City Coast Guard Recreation. The facility offers nine cabins from three bedrooms-two baths to one bedroom, and fourteen RV spots with full hook-up. Dogs are not permitted in the cabins. Leashed pets are allowed on the campsite.
Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City also offers an Exchange, picnic area, and a playground.
