This week’s featured Military Retirement Location is Smyrna, Tennessee! Smyrna is a town in Rutherford County and is a suburb of Nashville, located just southeast of the big city. Smyrna made our list due to all it has to offer its residents, along with lower than average housing price and cost of living indices.
Whether you like to spend your time at the NASCAR track, catching a music act, or exploring the great outdoors, Smyrna has a little bit of something for everyone! Smyrna is bordered to the north by the Percy Priest Lake and the Couchville Cedar Glade State Natural Area, where you’ll find plenty of trails for you and your four-legged friends to hike. The Percy Priest Lake is a popular spot for boating, and you can check out one of the many recreation areas where you can put in. There’s the Fall Creek Recreation Area which is popular with kayakers and anglers, also!
The Nashville Superspeedway sits about a 20 minute drive northeast of Smyrna, just past Fall Creek. Nashville is a major NASCAR track, and if you’re a racing fan, you can expect to catch several significant events here. If you’re a history buff, Stones River National Battlefield is about a 15 minute drive southeast, on the west end of neighboring Murfreesboro. Murfreesboro has several museums, several arts centers and galleries, and hosts Middle Tennessee State University.
Located right in Smyrna is also a Tennessee National Guard Training Area, meaning you’ll have an exchange right in town. VA facilities, like a major medical center and regional benefit office, are located nearby in Nashville with small facilities much closer. No matter what your interests, you’re sure to find something going on not too far from home here in Smyrna!
