This week’s featured Military Retirement Location is Pelham, Alabama! Pelham makes our list thanks to its low cost-of-living and affordable real-estate market, average distance to military facilities, and proximity to major VA facilities.
Oak Mountain State Park is undoubtedly Pelham’s major attraction. The park features hiking and mountain bike trails, as well as camping sites, swimming in the lake, and a BMX track, to name a few. The Oak Mountain Golf Course is repeatedly ranked as one of the top fifty public courses in the country. There’s even an aqua-park within the park, complete with inflatable slides and a floating obstacle course. If you wan to check out some animals, head to the Alabama Wildlife Center, not far from the Oak Mountain Marina on Double Oak Lake.
Of course there’s plenty to do – Pelham also hosts Birmingham’s’ premier outdoor amphitheater, where you can catch any of your favorite national headliners of any genre. If the weather isn’t cooperating, check out the Altitude Trampoline Park on the northern side of town. Nearby Birmingham hosts a number of museums, the University of
Alabama-Birmingham, the Birmingham Zoo, and plenty of nightlife. Your nearest major military installation is Maxwell Air Force Base, about 74 miles away, and you have a nearby VA medical facility at the Birmingham VA Medical Center, only 19 miles away.
