Naval Base Coronado to Get New Navy Exchange and NGIS Lodging Facility

Planning to break ground in March of 2025, the company Delawie has been awarded the project, which will replace the current NGIS and NEX on Naval Base Coronado. They expect to complete the project by 2027.

"Delawie has been awarded the design of the combined Navy Gateway Inn and Suites (NGIS) and Navy Exchange (NEX) on Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. The project replaces both the existing NGIS and NEX on Naval Base Coronado. Delawie is partnered with Stellar (Jacksonville, Fla.), the contractor of this Design-Build project.

ā€œDelawie is excited to be a part of this innovative project, combining the Navy Gateway Inn & Suites with an NEX,ā€ Principal-in-Charge, Mike Asaro, LEED AP shared. ā€œThis is a first of its kind facility for the Navy Exchange Command with the potential to impact future developments. We are grateful to continue our support of the United States military with the design of NGIS and NEX on Naval Amphibious Base Coronado.ā€

ID3 Design (Encinitas, Calif.) leads the interior design, including finishes, furniture and equipment selections. Coffman Engineers (San Diego, Calif.) provides multi-disciplinary engineering designer services. Crescere Design (San Marcos, Calif.) is the landscape architect.

The six-story steel framed hotel includes 200 rooms and suites, including five ABA compliant rooms. The integration of a steel structural system offers expedited constructability and reduced construction cost. NGIS provides views of both the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay.

There is direct guest access to the single-story NEX with its 24/7 X-Mart and coffee shop. The 8,000 SF NEX features an indoor and outdoor food court space, barber shop, tailor, and laundromat. The NEX is accessible via a separate entrance in addition to accessibility from the Navy Gateway Inn and Suites.

Delawieā€™s design ensures each facility complements one another, both visually and functionally with new contemporary layouts and finishes. Both share similar, yet distinct, material and color palettes. The NGIS and NEX share back-of-house spaces with each entity having individual entrances.

Expected completion of the combined Navy Gateway Inn and Suites (NGIS) and Navy Exchange (NEX) on Naval Amphibious Base Coronado is January 2027."
