This week’s Featured Military Retirement Location is Lexington, Kentucky! Lexington is home to the University of Kentucky, and is about an hour east of Louisville. Fort Knox is the nearest major military facility, and there you’ll find all the standard amenities one can expect. Lexington’s draw is its many cultural and recreational activities in the surrounding area.
Horses take center stage here in Lexington, and Churchill Downs (the site of the Kentucky Derby) is not too far away in Louisville. Lexington hosts several facilities such as the Kentucky Horse Park (complete with a campground), where you can view the American Saddlebred Museum and the International Museum of the Horse. Lexington hosts the Breeders Cup race, the last major event of the horse-racing season.
Lexington has plenty to offer if you’re looking for things other than racing events. Mary Todd Lincoln once called the area home, and you can visit her historic house downtown. Head to the Rupp Arena where you can catch a University of Kentucky basketball game or touring musical acts. Lexington also has plenty of golf courses and country clubs. If you have kids visiting or some of your own, take them downtown to the Explorium of
Lexington to see interactive art and science exhibits. Of course, if you ever run out of things to do in Lexington, you can always head down to Louisville. We recommend the Louisville Slugger Museum, where you can customize your own bat!
