A Guide To The Latest Space-A Eligibility

Now that Space-A flights are reinstated, let’s have a look at travel eligibility and define the categories associated with Space-A travel.


On April 22, 2022, limitations concerning Space-A travel were removed. Furthermore, some changes in Air transportation eligibility were made on March 2, 2022. Here is a rundown of the travel eligibility and their categories.


It is interesting to notice as well, that since October 23rd, 2020 according to DoDI 4515.13 (Change 5 (Section 4, Table 3, Items 48-51) surviving spouses of service members who died in active duty are eligible for Space availability travel.

Air Mobility Command (AMC)~” On April 22, 2022, Paul D. Cramer signed an updated memorandum canceling Space-A travel program category limitations due to COVID-19 and reinstating all Space-A travel program categories as defined in Department of Defense Instruction 4515.13, Air Transportation Eligibility, Change 6.



TRAVEL ELIGIBILITY (FROM DODI 4515.13)


  • CATEGORY I – EMERGENCY LEAVE UNFUNDED TRAVEL.


  • CATEGORY II – ACCOMPANIED EML


  • CATEGORY III – ORDINARY LEAVE, RELATIVES, HOUSE HUNTING PERMISSIVE TDY, MOH HOLDERS & FOREIGN MILITARY


  • CATEGORY IV – UNACCOMPANIED EML


  • CATEGORY V – PERMISSIVE TDY (NON-HOUSE HUNTING), STUDENTS, DEPENDENTS, POST DEPLOYMENT/MOBILIZATION RESPITE ABSENCE & OTHERS


  • CATEGORY VI – RETIRED, DEPENDENTS, RESERVE, ROTC, NUPOC, CEC, VETERANS WITH A PERMANENT SERVICE-CONNECTED DISABILITY RATED AS TOTAL, AND SURVIVING SPOUSES OF SERVICE MEMBERS WHO DIED IN ACTIVE DUTY, INACTIVE DUTY TRAINING, OR ANNUAL TRAINING STATUS A


TRAVEL INSTRUCTIONS 1. Travel eligibility | Review Travel Eligibility Categories 1-6 (above) to determine your Space-A travel category. 2. Locations | Review common destinations offered at your nearest AMC Passenger Terminal by visiting their social media page. 3. Document check | Ensure you have the required travel documents, e.g. passport with visas. Customs and Immigration requirements may change. Contact your departure passenger terminal for current documentation requirements or travel restrictions. Other information regarding travel documents may be found by visiting the U.S. Department of State International Travel website. 4. Registration | Contact your nearest AMC Passenger Terminal. 5. Flight schedules | For specific travel information, contact your nearest AMC Passenger Terminal or check their FB page to see the 72-hour flight schedule. 6. Checking in | Check in at the terminal counter to mark yourself present and review updated flight information. Ensure you do not exceed baggage weight limits and are not traveling with any prohibited items. Await your Space-A call and follow instructions given to you by the passenger service agents.”~ Air Mobility Command (AMC).
