Taking to the Trails with RJ & Liz | Kill Devil Hills, NC, Part 1

Our dog Cruze is a twelve year old rescue. We have had trouble finding someone to dog sit him, and he just did not do well in a kennel. We wanted to take a beach trip, so what were we going to do? We started exploring our options, and the Outer Banks have been on our radar for a while. We like going to the beach in winter and hope for some warm weather, as long as it’s 40 to 70 degrees we are fine with it.

Cruze out for a beach walk

We found the John Yancey Oceanfront Inn (2009 S. Virginia Dare Trail, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948, ph. 252-441-7141, johnyanceyinn.com.) It was a very comfortable hotel room with a view of the ocean that had high quality vinyl floors, so you did not have to worry about dragging in sand from the beach or your dog scratching up the floors. Our room was on the second floor overlooking the beach, so a quick step out of the hotel and you could walk your dog on the beach. There were a good 25 dogs in the hotel, and considering how many dogs were in the building the noise level was very low.

My favorite place to eat in Kill Devils Hills was right across the street at the Kill Devil Grill – a good variety of dishes including seafood, steak, pastas, soups and salads cooked on a grill. The waiters are friendly and fast. If I ate here everyday, I would have been happy with my choice.

In one word – Magical. The tallest dune on the east coast. It has 427 acres of land with a 360 foot boardwalk to get you further into the park. The park rangers were very sharp and helpful. It is just amazing to experience.
