One of the benefits of military retirement living in Central Florida is the easy access to military facilities on both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Our preference is MacDill, AFB, approximately four miles from downtown Tampa. We try to drive there four or five times a year, if for nothing else, a stop at the Class VI Exchange. We have an opportunity to purchase alcohol at the Navy Exchange in Orlando, near the airport, but the wider selection of craft beers and wines gives us an excuse to drive to MacDill.

Recently, on a hot, summer Sunday afternoon we decided to cool down and take a ride to Tampa. Along with our regular Class VI Exchange stop, we did some shopping in the newly remodeled BX. MacDill AFB is headquarters for the U.S. Central Command and the Special Operations Command. Moreover, it seems like there is always construction in progress. In fact, the last time we were at MacDill contractors were putting the finishing touches on the new five-story MacDill Inn lodging facility.

We are happy to report that the beautiful 350 room visiting quarters facility opened on April 15, 2016. Curious, we thought we would check it out! As you can tell by my photo, the entrance landscaping is a little weak, but maybe it will grow on me later! The lobby is spacious and includes a small bar plus a cafe selling specialty coffee and a variety of pastry and sandwiches. Rooms are $60 per night; suites are $69. Space available guests may make a reservation up to 60 days in advance, but that is always subject to change. We did not have the opportunity to inspect any rooms or suites, but there are pictures on the 6th Force Support Squadron Facebook page. They are the unit that supports the MacDill Inn, plus they have other information relating to recreational base activities.

The 6th FSS also have a website (http://www.macdillfss.com/default.aspx) that contains contact numbers and other pertinent MacDill Inn information. Certainly the new MacDill Inn is an added benefit and reason for anyone to visit MacDill AFB and the Gulf coast area.
