Low-Cost Military Lodging in New Jersey for Families and Single Travelers
by Ann Crawford, Publisher, Military Living™ Publications
(This feature originally appeared in R&R Travel News® . . . plus new information which appears in this update.)
I have a special fondness for New Jersey. It's not just because two of our children were born there at nearby Fort Monmouth in the early 1960's. It's not even because of the many wonderful, specialty restaurants, the gorgeous colors in the fall, and the huge pumpkins available in October for decorating and carving!
The New Jersey beaches were a constant source of low-cost fun for our one-day trips! Add to that the closeness to New York City and being able to easily get there quickly by train or bus. Once there, the USO has discount tickets to all kinds of entertainment.
Enough about our family memories of life in the military in New Jersey—it's time for YOU to make your own military vacation travel memories, whether you are active or retired, Guard or Reserve, a private or an Admiral, married or single, widow or widower. DoD and DoT civilians are also included.
Did you know that at NWS Earle, NJ currently maintains ten housing units, one two-bedroom and eight three-bedroom units? Each includes a living room, dining area and full kitchen and laundry with all the amenities, as well as the bedrooms and a bathroom. All the units are situated in the residential area of the station.
NEWS - This fall, MWR officially opened the third phase of its housing accommodations, Visitor's Recreational Lodging, in former award winning barracks buildings. Some are already open to visitors. Each of the rooms has been completely refurbished, includes a queen-size bed, kitchenette with full refrigerator, microwave, electrical appliances, cable TV and Internet access. There are 30 individual units on two floors in two buildings, many overlooking a recreational area with trees and a gazebo with hot tub. The units rent for $40 and $45 per night and are available for overnight or longer term stays.
"We opened these units because of the number of personnel who come from all over the country to attend some of the schools on station," said MWR Director, Mary Borree. "Earle is not in an area readily accessible to economy-priced motels or hotels, especially during the tourism season at the shore."
Reservations are necessary for any of the units, including the RV park, and can be made up to 60 days in advance. For further information, contact the Housing Manager, Victoria Sewell at 732-866-2122. Her e-mail address is: victoria.sewell@navy.mil
